Black History Month

This week we have been learning about important black figures in History. We learnt about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr and Pele. We learnt about the important contributions these people have made to society and the struggles they faced fighting for their rights. We also learnt about Marcus Rashford. We recognised how important he has been in helping to feed disadvantaged children across the UK during the pandemic. He has also brought us all joy and happiness playing for England. It is Marcus's birthday on Halloween so Year 2 took this opportunity to write him a birthday card where we told him how amazing he is. We have even sent a few to him at Manchester United!

Black History Month 2021

Welcome to Year 2

Summer 2

After a wonderful Summer 1, we are looking forward to a very exciting Summer 2. We will be looking closely at the curriculum to ensure you feel confident in Maths and continuing our homework on Times Tables Rockstars. In English, we will be looking at some twisted interpretations of traditional tales and writing letters, character descriptions and our own twisted tales. We will also continue looking at working on our Phonics. Once again, we will be adding a published piece onto Pobble.

In History we will be learning all about the 1950s, and in Music we will be exploring the use of music in films. In DT we have the extremely exciting task of creating a bumble bee and butterfly home to potentially serve our class butterflies.

We want to celebrate the work that you are doing at home so please remember to send your work to:

Miss Robinson - class5@mestycroft.sandwell.sch.uk

Miss Lyne - class6@mestycroft.sandwell.sch.uk

Summer 2 - Week 4

This week in Year 2 we have been making lots of links in English. We listened to the story of The Billy Goats Gruff and thought about how it is from the point of view of the goats, just like The Three Little Pigs was from the point of view of the pigs. We then considered how it would be different if it were from the Trolls point of view, just like Jon Scieszka. We pretended that we were the troll and acted out our emotions when the mean little billy goats came trip trapping over our bridge.

Summer 2 - Week 3

This week in Year 2 we have been excitedly watching our class caterpillars. As part of our Year 2 learning in PSHE, we have been looking at changes and have been extremely inquisitive about the changes that occur in the process of metamorphosis. We have linked this to the changes that occur around us, such as the seasons and weather, and those that happen to us as we get older, such as moving to KS2 the many teeth that fall out over the year in Year 2.

Summer 2 - Week 2

This week in Year 2 we have been have been doing lots of work on plants and recycling. We have been investigating different recycled items to check their suitability for our butterfly and bumblebee homes. We chose an item that is strong, waterproof and needs to be recycled to help protect our planet. We decided to use plastic bottles.

We have also planted our special seeds that will grow butterfly and bumblebee friendly plants ready for the recycled homes.

Summer 2 - Week 1

This week in Year 2 we have been introduced to our new topics for this half term. We have had a particularly exciting time in Science as we have created some Grassheads. We filled sections of tights with grass seed and soil, tied it off and positioned them in different areas around the school. We have some in the fridge, some in the dark cupboard and some on the sunny windowsill. Can you predict what will happen to each of them?

Welcome to Year 2

Summer 1

After an interesting Spring term, we are looking forward to an exciting summer of subjects. We will be looking closely at the curriculum to ensure you feel confident in Maths. In English, we will be looking at creating setting and character descriptions, writing imaginative stories and comprehension skills. We will also continue looking at working on our Phonics. When we have completed an independent write, it will be available for you to see on your Pobble account.

In Geography, we will be exploring the Arctic and Antarctic, and in Music we will be learning how to play the recorder. In art, we will be appreciating the work of Monet and learning how to use oil pastels. In our final lesson, we will merge our inspiration from Monet's pieces and our new oil pastel skills to create our final piece.

We want to celebrate the work that you are doing at home so please remember to send your work to:

Miss Robinson - class5@mestycroft.sandwell.sch.uk

Miss Lyne - class6@mestycroft.sandwell.sch.uk

Summer 1 - Week 6

This week in Year 2 we finished off our E-books and peer assessed our work. We looked at each other's books, gave 2 positive comments and suggested a target to work on next time. Not only did we create e-books in school, many of our Year 2 children continued their learning at home by creating a range of interesting fiction and non-fiction texts.

Summer 1 - Week 5

This week in Year 2 we engaged in some art appreciation. We explored Monet's Japanese bridge and discussed other pieces of his art such as 'Woman with a parasol' and 'Garden at Giverny'. We then channelled our inner unicorn and started to create our own imitations of 'Japanese Bridge' using oil pastels.

Summer 1 - Week 4

This week in Year 2 we have been recapping our knowledge of multiplication and division in Maths. Miss Robinson and Miss Lyne have been really impressed with how well Year 2 have remembered doubling and halving and the way some of our children have challenged themselves like the beaver this week.

We have also been continuing to look at habitats in Science. We are really enjoying this Science topic and this week we compared a tropical and desert habitat.

Summer 1 - Week 3

We have had a very exciting week in Year 2 this week. We have been experimenting with recorders in Music, practising playing notes and making tunes, it was a lot of fun.

We have also been looking at different places of worship in RE this half term. This week we had a look at the Muslim place of worship, a Mosque. We had some really interesting conversations about the routines and traditions which are followed in a Mosque and we used some fantastic adjectives to describe the buildings.

This week in English we used all of the skills we have been learning this half term to create our narrative openings. We worked very hard and even edited our work to make it the best it can be.

Summer 1 - Week 2

This week we have been completing our work on time but this is by no means the end of our learning of time. We will continue to recap and draw focus to telling the time in everyday circumstances. We would also be grateful for your continued support at home as learning time is an ongoing process.

We have been continuing with description in English by learning how to use similes and expanded noun phrases to describe a beautiful image from Alice in Wonderland. This will result in some interesting narratives that will be uploaded onto Pobble for you and your children to see at home (please let us know if you need guidance when setting up your Pobble account).

We have also continued learning the recorder and have been practicing our breathing techniques in order to produce steady notes.

It has been another fantastic week with a wide array of learning. We are excited to see what happens next week.

Summer 1 - Week 1

This week we have been continuing our work on time in Maths so a big well done and thank you to those of you who completed their homework on this during the half term. We have been exploring our senses in English to help write a beautiful setting description and we also explored the use of similes.

We have also started our learning journey in Art and have been introduced to the artist Monet.

In Music this week we looked at what a recorder was and started to learn how to make the different notes.

It has been a varied and exciting week. What a fantastic start to the summer term!

Welcome to Year 2

Spring 2

Although we are working differently, we are still looking forward to an exciting half term of subjects. We will be looking closely at the curriculum to ensure you feel confident in Maths. In English, we will be looking at some non-fiction texts and poetry that relate to the exciting topic of castles. We will also continue looking at working on our Phonics.

In History, we will be exploring the Romans and in Music we will be singing our way through the topic of musicals. There are lots of other skills to be learned this half term and we will be right beside you to guide you on the way.

We want to celebrate the work that you are doing at home so please remember to send your work to:

Spring 2 - Week 6

See the pictures below for some of the lovely Easter activities that we have been up to this week.

Spring 2 - Week 5

This week we have been learning all about fractions in Maths and the Great Fire of London in English. It has been really interesting! We thought about what we would save from the fire and how we would have felt if our house had burned down. This will really help us next week when we are writing our letters.

We also practised our sewing skills in DT ready to make our egg cosies next week, it was a bit tricky for some of us but it was still really fun!

In Music this week we finished off our songs from musicals unit and performed 'Do, Re, Mi' from the Sound of Music together as a class. Year 2 really enjoyed this song and even got creative and thought of some matching actions.

Spring 2 - Week 4

This week we have been showing off our skills in reading and maths. We got creative with our music curriculum and learned how to sing the C major scale. We also had the chance to relax by making our own beautiful Zen Garden with sand and natural items that we found outside.

Spring 2 - Week 3

This week, we have settled back beautifully. We have been innovating for the future in our Science Week work and creating designing amazing inventions to improve the world. From self-flushing toilet designs to aquatic vehicles (an interesting and varied array). In English, we have immersed ourselves in the stunning, whole-school book, 'Journey' and let our imaginations run wild with magic and adventure. Our maths has taken us outside to get real world experience of 3D shapes and how we can sort them. It has been a filled and varied week.

We wish you all a wonderful weekend and a lovely Mothers Day.

Welcome to our Year Two page!

In Year Two this year, the team is Miss Robinson, Miss Lyne, Mrs Mansell, Mrs Binning an Miss Taylor.

If your child is in this year group, please familiarise yourself with this page as it will let you know the various activities the class are currently involved in.

This year we will be teaching a wide range of subjects discretely: English, Maths, Science, Art, Computing, History and Geography. We aim to update our page every week; giving you a snapshot of our learning.

This term, Class 5 will have P.E on Monday afternoon and Class 6 will have P.E on Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your children  bring their P.E uniforms on this day and that earrings are removed.

Diaries will signed each Monday and any notes will be read and replied to as needed. Please make a note of your child's reading in their diary and feel free to share notes of any other home learning that they have been doing.

Year Two SATs:

In May, your children will be tested on their knowledge and understanding of the Key Stage One curriculum in English and Mathematics. We will report a teacher assessment to yourselves and the Local Authority when these have been completed.

Reading Books: Children choose Reading for Pleasure books from the library themselves - these books may be too difficult to read independently but are great as a shared read with you at home.

Read, Write, Inc: Your children will soon come home with a phonics book that has been chosen due to their assessments. Please allow your child to read with you at home, daily, to help their fluency and expression.

Readiwriter: New spellings are set every Monday.

Mathletics: New maths homework will be set every Monday.

For children who are self-isolating and have only mild symptoms that do not prevent them from completing work, please see attached some activities that may be completed at home.
Home Learning Packs for children:

Autumn Two: Week Five:

December at Mesty Croft:

This week Elvis the elf arrived in Key Stage 1 and caused absolute mayhem... that naughty elf! He covered the whole of the open area in toilet roll, hasn't he heard about the shortage this year?

We are really excited about Christmas at Mesty Croft and class 5 have an amazing Christmas tree in their classroom. Class 6 are waiting for Miss Lyne to come back to put their decorations up, but they are really excited to get decorating their classroom as well!

In Music and DT this week we have also been getting in the Christmas spirit, creating Christmas cards for our friends and starting to learn our songs for a special remote Christmas performance.

History:

We have been learning all about the Gunpowder Plot this half term and this week we looked at the different ways it has been celebrated and remembered throughout history. It was very interesting to see how it has changed over hundreds of years. We were really surprised when we found out that people have been putting a 'Guy Fawkes' on their bonfires since the 1700s!

Here is some of the different ways Bonfire night has been celebrated since it started as Guy Fawkes day in 1606:

Science:

This week we have been planning our very own experiment to find the answer to the question; 'Which magnet is the strongest?' So far this half term we have been learning a lot about magnets (we even found out that the Earth is a magnet!)

Whilst we were planning our experiment we thought about:

* The equipment we would need

* How we would conduct the experiment (our method)

* How we would record our results

* What we thought would happen (our prediction)

Autumn Two: Week Four:

Maths:

This week, in Maths we started to learn about money, it was a bit tricky at the start but we were soon enjoying learning about all of the different coins. On Thursday we were even able to help Santa spend the right amount of money on filling the stockings. It was so much fun and it definitely put us in the Christmas spirit!

English - The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark

This week we finished our class book; The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. Everyone in year 2 really enjoyed reading about the adventures of Plop. This week Year 2 completed a narrative, creating their own chapter of the book, introducing a new character, writing about all of our senses and some of us even included speech marks in our writing! Miss Robinson and Miss Lyne were really impressed with some of the chapters the children created.

Autumn Two: Week Three:

Class 6 return

This week Class 6 came back to school. Whilst they had a great time learning at home we were all excited for them to be back in school. Here is some of the learning they did whilst they were learning from home:

We learnt all about Diwali, which was celebrated on Saturday.

We spent some time looking at the significance of Remembrance Day and made some poppies to stick in our windows

Music

This half term we have been learning about traditional Chinese music and this week we learnt about traditional Chinese instruments and we even learnt about pentatonic scales. It was a lot of fun!

Autumn Two: Week Two:

Horrible History!

This week, in our history lesson, we looked into the very interesting history of the gunpowder plot. We looked at the Catholic and Protestant religions and discussed how Catholics were not accepted in Stuart era England. We explored how Catholics had to keep their religion a secret and considered how scary it would be to have to hide. We found out that Catholic Priests would have to hide in 'Priest Holes' to make sure that they were not captured by the Priest Hunters and executed.

Children in Need

On Friday, for Children in Need, we get dressed up in the clothes that made us happy. Thanks to the Grinch, we were very happy.

Autumn Two: Week One:

What a wonderful week back! We have seen the lovely impact that our colourful Halloween pictures had at the Willows Nursing Home and realised the importance of being kind to others. How can you show kindness this week?

Autumn One: Week Eight:

We had the most wonderful time this week with our scarecrow making. We worked together in our classes to make fantastic scarecrows in the theme 'Key Workers' for The Big Sandwell Scarecrow Festival. Head over to Facebook and get voting for Mesty Croft Academy!

Many thanks for the donations of resources for our scarecrows.

Autumn One: Week Seven:

This week, in Computing, we have been continuing our work on E-Safety. We know how important it is to tell an adult if we see something that makes us feel funny in our tummy and makes us feel uncomfortable. We used the programme Jit5 to create a safety circle which showed who we could talk to if we needed help and if something online ever makes us feel uncomfortable.

Autumn One: Week Six:

This week, in RE, we have been continuing our work on kindness. We looked at the work that organisations such as Christian Aid and the Samaritans do and how this links with the Christian teaching of 'love thy neighbour' and 'love thy stranger'. We have debated whether it is possible for us to be kind to everyone all of the time and decided that we were going to try to show kindness, just like Jesus did in the Bible stories we have read.  We decided, from an idea put forward by one of our lovely parents, to show kindness to strangers through sending pictures to a care home to brighten it up and cheer up the residents. We are fabulous at being kind in Year 2!

Autumn One: Week Five:

This week, we have been pattern seeking in our Science lessons. We carried out an investigation to find out whether bigger hands were able to grab more cubes. We predicted that children with a bigger hand length would be able to pick up the most cubes. Our prediction was correct for most of the children but there was one child who picked up les even though they had a bigger hand.

Autumn One: Week Four:

This week, we have been working extremely hard in Maths. We have been focusing on place value and have been able to order and compare numbers.

Fred, the phonics frog, has also been very impressed with our narrative work this week as we have been using capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and we have been using our Fred Fingers to help with our spelling.

Autumn One: Week Three:

This week, we have been introduced to all of our new topics for this half term. We are excited about our upcoming work in Art as we will be looking at Kandinsy's 'Squares with Concentric Circles' and how to use paint to create a beautiful piece of art in this style. We have also been introduced to our wonderful Music topic, Western Classical Music, and have listened to 'Hoe-down' by Aaron Copland. We will go on to create a performance in this style.

Autumn One: Week Two:

We have been very excited in Year Two about our 'One School, One Book' topic. This week we have read 'The Tin Forest' by Helen Ward and explored a range of activities around this story.  We have made beautiful origami birds, collected and painted leaves, made wildlife habitats, planted seeds and created beautiful chalk pictures.

Welcome back to Summer Two!

We are now into our final half term in Year Two and hasn't it been the strangest end to our year? We hope that you had a lovely half term break and managed to get outside as much as possible in the beautiful weather we had over the last week.

Home learning will continue as before, with all work to be sent to the following email addresses:

Class 5 = class5@mestycroft.sandwell.sch.uk
Class 6 = class6@mestycroft.sandwell.sch.uk

Mathletics and Spellodrome will continue to be set daily and an exciting daily task around one of our subjects will continue. Teachers will email feedback to you within 24 hours, however, Class 6 may notice that Mrs Baker helps out with your feedback, as Miss Usher will be busy teaching in Year One this half term. She will still be looking at all of your fabulous work and will email you throughout the week to tell you which pieces have been her favourite!

Remember to BELIEVE AND ACHIEVE. We hope to see you all very soon.
