  • World Book Day 2020!

    Fri 06 Mar 2020

We celebrate books every day at Mesty Croft Academy; our love of Reading really does shine brightly.

Once again, we couldn’t wait to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 5th March 2020, with a day dedicated to simply... Reading! No costumes for us this year, we decided to focus purely on children's literature; however it was so much more than just coming in normal uniforms and bringing a book (just ask the children!). They had so much fun; Year 2 rattled through the ‘Tin Forest’, Year 3 were enchanted by Macbeth ‘spells’ and Year 5 took a walk on the spooky side!

The day began with an Assembly to remember that ‘Reading really does take us to places we’ve never imagined’ and to share our #shelfie entries so far! The children also received their WBD token.

The whole school hosted ‘Book Tasting’ in their classrooms. The tables were set, the courses of their ‘favourite’ books from home were served and they tucked in! They had the most incredible time; what’s more ‘chatter matters’ and they had so much to share and talk about. It really was a roaring success. We ended the day with a story/poem read by a different Teacher, including Mrs Bray who shared 'Pig in the Pond' with Nursery-SPLASH!

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank those families who, instead of purchasing a costume, chose to gift a book from our new Amazon Wishlist. This was set up to help support our new Library and your gift means such a lot to us and, more importantly, our children. Thank you!

Keep your eyes peeled for photos in the gallery and of course on class pages.

Once again, we would like to thank you for your continued support.

  • Children's Mental Health Week 3-9 February 2020

    Mon 03 Feb 2020

The week is run by children's mental health charity Place2Be; for the last two academic years we have commissioned the charity to work in school 2 days per week (each Monday and Friday) whereby they operate a counselling service. If you wish to speak to anyone in school about this please contact Mel Denniss- Project Manager (Monday and Friday only) or Mrs Dhanda- Family Support Practitioner via the School Office or call 0121 556 0854.

Place2Be focus on the importance of children and young people's mental health. This year's theme is 'Find Your Brave'.

Bravery comes in all shapes and sizes and is different for everyone. Bravery can be about sharing worries and asking for help, trying something new or pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. 'Finding Your Brave' can build your confidence, self-esteem and make you feel good about yourself. This is the message that our children were given in assembly to launch Children's Mental Health Week. They were encouraged to reflect on a time recently when they were brave and to think about how this made them feel. We had lots of responses from riding a bike without stabilisers to taking armbands off in the swimming pool; one little boy in Year 2 managed to 'find his brave' later that day when the Animal Man visited and he went from screaming in fear to holding each of the animals presented! Well done Nathan!

We also looked at books and challenged our children to identify brave characters from stories that they had read.

As a school we are really proud to say that, although we have celebrated Children's Mental Health Week this week, for us every week is children's mental health week. We have a variety of strategies and interventions designed to support social and emotional health and wellbeing; we can also signpost and refer to external agencies if required.

  • Anti-Bullying Production 'Just Joshing'

    Wed 25 Sep 2019

Today we welcomed Firehorse Productions into school as they performed 'Just Joshing', an Anti-Bullying production to children in Years 2 to 6.

The performance was well-crafted and allowed our children to take a look at bullying from three different perspectives: the person being bullied, the bully and the bystander. The actors delivered a dynamic and informative performance, emphasising the anti-bullying message. There was a balance of humour and reflection and the 'stand up and speak out' mantra was repeated throughout.

The production introduced Josh, a usually friendly, upbeat, happy-go-lucky school child...that is until he meets his nemesis Jack, who seems intent on making his life a misery. We also meet Dotty, Jack's not so innocent sidekick and therefore bystander. The script goes on to explore the effects of bullying upon all involved.

Cyber-bullying is also covered and the script promotes ways to combat this.

With thought-provoking audience participation throughout, the characters continually confide in the audience and ultimately it is them who decide if what they have witnessed is bullying or as Jack uses in his defence 'Just Joshing'.

Our children thoroughly enjoyed the production and it was interesting to see how much they grew to dislike Jack throughout the performance; they soon picked up that his comments and behaviour towards Josh were inappropriate. They felt sorry for Josh and recognised that Dotty wasn't helping.
