Spring 2023

Spring 2 Week 5

This week we have been learning about the ways in which some people celebrate Easter. We held our own Easter Bonnet Parade and invited our grown-ups to come along and watch. Look at our fabulous bonnets!

Spring 2 Week 4

This week we invited our Mums or 'Special Ladies' to join us in school. We went to the Hall where there was plenty of space for some play activities and crafts - making a medal for our Mums, creating a picture of our Mums and making a beautiful flower picture for our Mums to keep.

It was great to see so many Mums and Special Ladies attending!

Spring 2 Week 3

This week we have explored making healthy choices.

We shared the story of Oliver's Vegetables, in which Oliver's Grandpa grows many healthy foods in his garden.

We explored some real vegetables. We sorted foods as 'healthy' (good for you - eat lots of these) and 'unhealthy' (eat these only sometimes, as a treat).

Look, our cress has grown already!

Spring 2 Week 2

We have continued our learning about 'In the Garden' by exploring the story 'Jasper's Beanstalk'.

Like Jasper, we have planted our own seeds - we are growing cress and green beans.

We have done lots of other activities linked to the story too: drawing pictures of real plants, comparing long and short objects, digging in soil, exploring real flowers, painting with real flowers and making some flower potions/soup in the water tray.

This week we also had some fun with the snow!

Spring 2 Week 1

Mesty Croft's World Book Day this year was based around poems and the theme of 'our community'.

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, Nursery heard and practised reciting this poem:

My Community

My community

Is a place

Where people work and live.

My community

Is a place

Where people help and give.

My community

Is a place

Filled with people I know.

My community

Is a place

Where I can play and grow.

My community

Is a place

That everyone can share.

My community

Is a place

Where people show they care.

My community

Is a place

Built for you and me.

My community

Is a place

Where I like to be!

'My Community' - This is a short video of some of the poem that we learnt:

Spring 1 Week 7

It was Valentine's Day this week so our learning was based on 'feelings'.

We shared two stories about love/feelings:

We explored some of the feelings in the stories - love, happiness, sadness, anger, calm, loneliness. Lots of our activities this week were linked to the story of The Colour Monster, including creating our own colour monsters and colour mixing.

Spring 1 Week 6

This week we have focussed on the traditional story 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.

Lots of our activities this week have linked to the story, including: creating a troll face from playdough, building bridges using different construction toys and retelling the story in the Small World or with masks as we 'trip-trapped' over the bridge outside.

Spring 1 Week 5

This week we learnt about the celebration of Lunar New Year. This year it is the year of the rabbit. We joined up with the Reception classes to dance like a dragon and to do some craft activities related to Lunar New Year - making a dragon puppet, collaging a rabbit picture and making a paper lantern.

There was another celebration happening this week too: NSPCC's National Number Day. On this day we were able to come to school dressed in number-themed clothes. We took part in lots of number-themed activities, including a number hunt around the garden, printing with Numicon, completing number jigsaw puzzles, number-themed mark-making and exploring the activities in our indoor Maths Area and outdoor Maths cupboard.

Spring 1 Week 4

This week we have shared the traditional story 'The Three Little Pigs'. As well as retelling the story together, we used our senses to explore the materials which the three pigs use to build their houses - straw, sticks and bricks. We have also used a variety of mediums to create pictures and models of houses.

Outdoors, on our new 'Construction Site', we have explored the role of a builder, using larger materials to construct models of houses.

Spring 1 Week 3

This week we have continued to retell and explore the traditional story 'The Enormous Turnip'. We used the skills of tearing and scrunching to create turnip pictures. We explored the force of 'pulling' outdoors using the tyres and indoors using the Geoboards and elastic bands. We used our senses to explore a cooked turnip and some of us even tasted it!

It snowed this week! Our garden was very slippery so we weren't able to get outside to explore the snow. Instead, we brought the outside in, and explored the snow indoors instead!

Spring 1 Week 2

This week we have been sharing the traditional story 'The Enormous Turnip'. We have retold the events of the story and explored about some of the vocabulary within it. Some of our activities this week included: role-playing being the characters, pretending to plant 'seeds' in the sandpit and printing using vegetables in paint.

Lots of us practised our cutting skills when creating a turnip to add to our 'garden'.

We also used our senses to explore a mystery object inside a feely bag. We tried to describe how it felt. Here are some words that we used: "Cold", "Hard", "Round", "Like a potato". Can you guess what was inside the bag?!

Spring 1 Week 1

Welcome back everyone!

Our theme this half term is Traditional Stories. This week we have shared, retold and explored the story of The Gingerbread Man.

We have also gained some new friends in Nursery this week - a big welcome to our five new starters! smiley
