  • WLCT Public Speaking Competition 2019

    Mon 25 Mar 2019

On Friday 22nd March, Mesty Croft Academy once again entered the annual WLCT Public Speaking Competition held at Sandwell Council House. This is the third year that we have entered the competition and we returned as defending champions following the success of Paige who won the Year 3/4 trophy last year. Paige bid this year's contestants, Milly from Year 4 and Max from Year 5, farewell and good luck as she handed over the trophy.

The topic up for debate this year linked to the Council's recent project 'Fizz Free February' and challenged pupils to consider why we should reduce our consumption of fizzy drinks.

Following a tough round of auditions, the chosen candidates for this year were Milly and Max. They planned and prepared two very good speeches and were both excited and proud to be representing our school.

This year, 10 Wednesbury primary schools participated in the event and the competition was judged by Mr Chris Ward, Director of Education for Sandwell, Dr Lola Abudu, Deputy Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England and Deputy Mayor, Carol Goult. Once again, the Council Chambers was the chosen venue for this prestigious event organised by Mr Butcher and the team at The Priory Primary.

The event began at 10.00am with Year 3/4 speakers taking to the stage first soon followed by Years 5/6 and the competition was exceptionally tough. Leaving the judges to their deliberations, the candidates left the room for light refreshments.

We are delighted to announce that Milly in Year 4 won the Year 3/4 trophy. Max was runner up in his Year 5/6 category but did exceptionally well just the same. We are so very proud of them both and thank them enormously for being fantastic ambassadors for our school.

Milly's speech was planned independently and she had learned it by heart; she spoke fluently and passionately and really engaged her audience. A deserved winner; congratulations Milly!
